Journalism is centered on the collection, reporting and analysis of information, with almost no attempt of interpretation. The idea is to provide the public with a balanced and objective view of reality. It tries to explain facts in an unbiased manner that anyone would understand.

Over the last few years there is a great improvement in biomedical knowledge and the interest of the public in health related information is constantly growing. There is a great demand for high quality writers who can communicate the information in a concise manner, free from technical jargon that can be understood by the masses.

Medical journalism deals with the dissemination of medical stories and topics in the mass media. Its target audience is the global public (not just specific groups of professionals) as it uses mainstream media outlets such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, online health portals etc. The topics related to medicine and health are largely interesting and aim at spreading awareness about different breakthroughs and changes in medicine and science.

Michael Kenward, an ex-editor of New Scientist, has rightly stated:

"Science writing is about explaining complex ideas that nobody wants to keep secret; science journalism is about explaining things that everyone can understand but that some might prefer to keep buried".

A career in the field of medical journalism provides the opportunity to go into detail about all contemporary concerns from medical, social and environmental standpoints.

If journalism interests you, at JLI you can enroll in a Professional Diploma in Medical Journalism (PDMJ) program, which will provide you with the necessary media skills to write and create awareness about varied health topics. The program employs a neutral approach to teach the necessary skills and has been developed to provide you with an in-depth knowledge about reporting facts related to medicine and health. It also provides the ability to recognize, investigate, analyze and narrate findings, issues and concerns. The program aims to help aspiring students enter the field with a strong enough foundation to be efficient in their new career.
