Pharmacovigilance is a bedrock system of surveillance of a drug's safety throughout its life-cycle i.e. from clinical trials to the time it stays in the market. The intended purpose is to protect the health of subjects who will consume the drug. Although self-explanatory, the term “pharmacovigilance” means to be 'vigilant' in action & response to any adverse reaction identified for a drug. There are a variety of methods that can be applied to the survey drugs in the market such as, Active Surveillance which involves active-patient follow-up (also called Cohort Event Monitoring), Passive Surveillance that coordinates to receive targeted spontaneous reports, Stimulated Reporting of ADR’s from an array of healthcare set ups, and several others.
Medical writing has turned to be an exciting blockbuster profession that has its core interests in the clinical / pharmaceutical industry. A promising number of novel drugs undergo a scathing process of clinical trials and regulatory submissions for a marketing approval before they can be released in the market. This compels a demand for highly informative and regulatory-compliant documents that health care and scientific experts can effortlessly go through and understand. Most of the medical writers possess a wide array of knowledge in medical science and have an innate talent of writing. In addition, to prevent delays in submissions and approvals, regulatory writers in the clinical scenario are required to understand the regulatory processes and document formats that are accepted and further processed by the regulatory authorities such as FDA, EMA, HSA Singapore etc. James Lind Institute offers structured advanced programs that equip you with the required skills and knowledge in both pharmacovigilance and medical writing enabling you to pursue exciting careers in these domains.
Towards the end of the program mock exercises and role plays may be conducted for relevant topics that guide students about handling on-job situations commonly faced by pharmacovigilance & medical writing professionals.
