The demand in the global pharmaceutical industry for medical and scientific writers is on a significant rise. These specialists mainly work on producing documents in standard formats, which are fully compliant to global regulations for various clinical trial and marketing applications of drugs, medical devices and biologics. The medical writing profession is essential in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, as medical writers prepare the most vital documents for regulatory approvals. Some of the documents, which are created by medical writers in the industry include Clinical Study Reports (CSRs), Periodic Safety Update Reports (PSURs), Investigator Brochures (IBs), Informed Consent Forms (ICFs) and many others.

Another side of the medical writing profession centers on writing promotional material for the marketing of pharmaceutical and biotech products and to create public awareness about these products and about healthcare in general. This form of writing is called medico-marketing writing, and the targeted audience can either consist of professionals such as medical practitioners, or the general public.

The number of clinical research organizations, medical communications companies, regulatory consulting agencies etc that provide specialized writing services are growing each year wherein medical writers can find rewarding career opportunities. This has resulted in a high demand for trained writers.
